WILMINGTON, N.C.– Madison Brown hit her first career home run to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, but the Cougars could not complete the comeback, losing 2-1 to the Seahawks on Sunday.
“This one was tough” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Sam pitched well for most of the game, our defense played well, and Madi [Brown] came up huge with the home run. We just didn't get timely hits, and we didn't play well at the end, and that's frustrating.”
In what amounted to a defensive struggle, the Cougars (24-20, 4-8) got an impressive performance from their ace pitcher, Samantha Martin. She went a complete 6.1 innings, striking out seven and allowing only two runs to Wilmington (24-18, 4-7).
The Seahawks scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single off of the bat of Lauren Moore. Other than that inning, the Cougars were able to keep a clean sheet against UNCW through the first six innings. Madison Brown's home run ended up being the College's only run, but Charleston did produce a few shining moments offensively, with Jordin Jones leading the way with a triple and a base hit on the day. The College drew five walks to go along with their five hits but eight Cougars were left stranded on base as well.
Unfortunately, a few timely hits by the Seahawks in the bottom of the seventh put Kelsey Bryan on third base, and while trying to intentionally walk UNCW's Ashley Best, a wild pitch allowed Bryan to advance home, ending the contest. This is the third game in the past five that CofC was tied or leading their opposition in the seventh inning in a losing effort.
What's Up Next
Charleston has now won just two of their last 10 games, and will look to flip the momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Cougars will welcome cross-town foe Charleston Southern to play a mid-week double header on Wednesday, April 20 at Patriots Point, before facing CAA rival Towson at home next weekend.
