ELON, N.C. – Madison Brown belted an RBI single through the right side in the top of the fourth inning for what would be the deciding run, as the College of Charleston softball team defeated Elon, 2-1, on Sunday.
“I thought we played with a lot more energy today, and that showed.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Sydney [Shipley] and Valerie [Cassell] played their butts off for us today, and while we didn't play our best game, we played good enough to win today and that is what matters.”
Charleston (23-13, 3-3) dropped it's previous two games to Elon (19-15, 5-1) on Saturday, and looked to take one back before heading home. Sydney Shipley got the start for The College, and pitched 4.2 innings en route to picking up her ninth win of the season. She struck out one, while allowing only four hits and one run.
Valerie Cassell came in to relive Shipley in the fifth inning, and worked her way out a bases-loaded situation to close the inning with no damage. Cassell picked up her first save of the season after tossing 2.1 innings and allowing only one hit.
Carly Hansis lead all batters with two hits, and five Cougars recorded at least one hit in the series finale. Rebecca Mueller recorded one of those hits, and extended her team-leading hit total to 47. She leads the Cougars in batting with a .402 average.
With the win, Charleston added to their lead in the all-time series record between Charleston and Elon, which now stands at 27-18 in the Cougars favor.
