MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.– Taylor DuPree led The College of Charleston softball team with four hits and three stolen bases on the day as the Cougars split their double-header against Towson, winning, 6-1, in the first game, and failing to complete the comeback in the second, losing, 3-2.
With the three stolen bases, DuPree now has 24 on the season, good for the second most stolen bases in a single season in program history. DuPree also holds the No. 1 spot for stolen bases with 26, a record she set in 2015, and is on pace to break in 2016.
Charleston (27-21, 5-9) moved up to sixth place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings after it's split today, while Towson (30-12, 7-6) maintains it's fourth place position in the conference. With the one win, College of Charleston head coach Linda Kalafatis' career record moved to 899, putting her one win away from 900. She will be one of less than 20 active division one coaches with 900 or more wins.
Game 1: Charleston 6, Towson 1
The Cougars entered the day on a bit of a hot streak, after sweeping cross-town rival, Charleston Southern on Wednesday. That momentum carried into the first game, as junior catcher Kashmir Huckaby hit two doubles and Samantha Martin carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning.
The Cougars scored five of its six runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits, a walk, a Tigers error, and a hit-by-pitch. CofC picked up their sixth run in the of the fourth after Valerie Cassell hit a single to bring DuPree to score one of her two runs in this game.
Martin tossed five complete innings, allowing only one hit in the fourth inning, and one walk in the fifth. She also struck out six Tigers batters before being relieved by Cassell to start the sixth inning. She went 2 complete innings, and struck out one while only allowing one run.
Game 2: Towson 3, Charleston 2
The second game of the day turned out to be more challenging for The College, as the Tigers took the lead early in the top of the first inning on a Brook Miko RBI single to center field. That score would stand until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Charleston made their move.
Dana Horgan and Taylor Dupree each singled to start the inning, and then they each stole second and third on the same play. Kelly Sinclair then singled, driving in one run to tie the game at 1-1. During the next at-bat, DuPree and Sinclair ran the ol' double-steal to perfection, with Sinclair advancing to second, and DuPree taking home and the lead.
Unfortunately, The College could not hold onto that lead. Towson scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking 3-2 lead that Charleston could not overcome.
Sydney Shipley started on the rubber for The College, pitching 5.1 innings, and striking out three batters. She only gave up four hits and one walk before being relieved by Valerie Cassell in the sixth inning. Cassell tossed 1.2 innings, and allowed one hit.
