Cougars Slay Dragons Twice on Senior Day

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team defeated Drexel twice on Friday at the Softball Complex at Patriots Point, and it honored its four seniors after the games.
Rebecca Mueller, Carly Hansis, Chandler Frisbie, and Valerie Cassell were each recognized for their contributions over the past four seasons, and by picking up two key wins today, they may have extended their season past this weekend.
“We came in a bit tight, but I think we were able to loosen up and really play well when we needed too.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis “These were two big wins for us, and I'm just very happy that we could do it for our seniors.”
Sophomore Taylor DuPree lead all batters with two hits, and three walks, as well as two stolen bases. She broke the program record for stolen bases in a season as well, as she now was 27. DuPree also held the record previously, as she stole 26 in 2015.
Game 1: Charleston 1, Drexel 0
In the first game of the night, the Cougars took the lead early after Taylor DuPree reached base on a walk. She then stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout, and advanced home on a ground out off of the bat of Rebecca Mueller. That run, scored off no hits, would stand as the only run of the game.
Chandler Frisbie recorded the only other hit for Charleston in the bottom of the third, but CofC did drew four walks, and only struck out one time.
Junior Samantha Martin started on the mound for the College, and put together one of her finest performances of the season. She tossed a complete seven innings, and struck out three batters, while allowing only one walk and three hits total.
Game 2: Charleston 10, Drexel 1
The second game of the day started off much like the first game, with Charleston taking a one run lead in the bottom of the first. Charleston would score two more in the third, and led 3-0 after three and one-half innings.
The Cougars opened the floodgates in the bottom of the fourth with a seven-run inning that was capped off by a three-run shot off the bat of Dana Horgan, her second homer of the season. Drexel would score one run in the top of the fifth, but could not muster enough to prevent the run-ruled early exit.
Kelly Sinclair and Rebecca Mueller each recorded two hits in the game, and Taylor DuPree and Kashmir Huckaby each drew two walks. Dana Horgan led all batters with three RBI off of the homer, and Sara Garcia netted two RBI as well.
Sydney Shipley started in the circle, and pitched 4.2 innings before being supplanted by Valerie Cassel for the last out of the game. Shipley struck out four, and allowed only five hits on the day. Cassell came in with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, and struck out her only batter to end the game.

Recognizing Our Seniors
The College saw four of their seniors be recognized for their contributions over the past four seasons after the games on Friday. All four have proven to be invaluable in their own ways, and have each left their mark in their own way.
Rebecca Mueller, Outfielder, Fair Oaks, Calif.
Mueller has served as a team captain, and has played, and started in, 213 games over her illustrious four-year career at the College of Charleston. With a career batting average of .335 on 211 hits, Mueller stands as one of the most prolific hitters in the Charleston history. Mueller also owns a career fielding percentage of .987, showing that her defensive prowess matched her offensive skills. She has made her mark in the record books as well, as her .374 batting average in 2016 is the fifth highest mark in program history. She is also in the record book with the eighth highest on-base percentage at .437, in her junior season, and tied for the ninth most triples with four, in her sophomore and junior seasons. She has earned All-Conference honors twice in her career
“I am going to miss Becca's competitiveness.” Head Coach Linda Kalafatis said of Mueller “She just wants to win out there, she plays with a lot of emotion, and I think she has been one of the best players in our conference over her career.”
Carly Hansis, Outfielder, Little River, S.C.
Hansis has appeared in 160 games, with 133 starts over her four seasons at the College of Charleston. With a career batting average of .307, and a career fielding percentage of .970, she ends her career as a Cougars as an invaluable member of the College's softball history. She has belted 11 career home runs, and earned First-Team All CAA honors in 2014. Carly earned a place in the College of Charleston record books with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 2015, making her one of nine Cougars to accomplish that feat.
“Carly has been such a success story” Kalafatis said “She has dealt with some injuries over her softball career, and she always found a way to get on the field and make contributions to the team in any position she plays.”
Chandler Frisbie, First Basement, Lawrenceville, Ga.
Frisbie has twice served as a team captain, and has played in 197 games, with 185 starts over her four seasons at The College of Charleston. Over those four years, Frisbie has amassed 1292 putouts at first base, including 401 back in 2013, good for the fourth most put outs in a single season in Cougars history. She has a career batting average of .264, and an impressive .985 fielding percentage over her career. She is also in the top 10 all-time for fielding percentage in a season after putting up a .991 mark in the 2014 season.
“Chandler has such a passion for life, a passion for the game, and a passion for life, and that passion has been contagious around here.” Kalafatis said. “Chandler has always played big, and she's been a great leader.”
Valerie Cassell, Pitcher/Utility, Edison, N.J.
Cassell has served as an invaluable contributor to the College of Charleston over her four seasons as a pitcher, fielder, and as a batter. In total, she has played in 116 games, and made 95 starts in various positions. She owns a career earned run average of 2.54, and a career batting average of .238. She has five career home runs as a batter, and, as a pitcher, she has struck out 206 batters over the course of 228.2 innings of work, and owns a career record of 16-6. She recorded her first career no-hitter in 2014 against South Carolina State.
“Val has helped us so much over this season, and over her career really.” Kalafatis said. “She is the type of person who, that when she sets her mind to do something, she does it, and you can see that in her growth as a player and as a person.”
