MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Senior Valerie Cassell hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to give The College of Charleston softball team an 8-0 lead, and a run-ruled victory over Drexel on Saturday.
The Cougars (33-21, 11-9) have all but clinched a berth in the CAA tournament, and are waiting on the results from around the league to determine the final seeding. Freshman Kelly Sinclair batted a perfect 4-4, drove in a run, and stole her fourth base of the season in the win, and Carly Hansis hit a triple in the sixth inning, in what would be her final at-bat at Patriots Point.
Samantha Martin picked up her 19th win of the season on Saturday, tossing four complete innings and striking out two batters while allowing only one hit. She was relieved by Valerie Cassell to start the fifth inning, and Cassell went on to toss two innings, striking out two and allowing no hits. Between the two of them, they allowed no walks.
“I'm proud of the way our girls came out and competed today.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis. “The way our seniors played in that final inning, with each of them contributing to the win, that was awesome to see.”
Charleston took the lead in the bottom of the third with a three run burst, and scored a fourth run in the fourth inning on a Taylor DuPree double that scored Madison Brown from second. That 4-0 lead would remain until the bottom of the sixth.
Carly Hansis led off the sixth inning action with a triple, and Chandler Frisbie drove her home with an RBI single in the next at-bat. A few batters later, Rebecca Mueller reached base on an error, and advanced to second on the throw, moving Kelly Sinclair to third and allowing Taylor DuPree to score from third. That's when Valerie Cassell stepped up to the plate and drove the ball to deep center field, allowing Kelly Sinclair to score, winning the game.
Next Up For The College
The Cougars were the first team in the CAA to complete their regular season schedule, and will now wait to see how the final standings will flesh out over the weekend. The entire tournament will run from Tuesday, May 10 to Friday, May 13.
