GAME PREVIEW
After an eight-day break for final exams, the College of Charleston men's basketball team (7-2) preps for one of its final non-conference tests at home with visiting NCAA Division II Georgia College (5-4) in a first-time meeting between both schools on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena. The Cougars are winners of their last four-straight games including a 72-64 win over Charlotte on Dec. 1. They will play three games in the next 10 days with an upcoming two-game road swing at VCU on Dec. 15 and Siena on Dec. 18. For the second time of his career, CofC Head Coach Earl Grant, a 2000 graduate of Georgia College, will face his alma mater on the opposite sideline. He led the Bobcats to consecutive Peach Belt Conference championships and to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2000 as a senior. Charleston is currently ranked No. 13 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll and holding opponents to just 66.6 points per game (No. 75 scoring defense in the nation and tops in the Colonial Athletic Association).
SCOUTING GEORGIA COLLEGE
The Bobcats snapped a three-game losing skid with a 72-54 home win over Albany State behind a double-double from senior forward Isaac Thomas (18 points and 16 rebounds) on Dec. 8. Georgia College returns its leading scorer from a year ago in sophomore guard Jordan Thomas, who is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points per game. CofC is the only NCAA Division I opponent on the Bobcats' schedule and Sunday's matchup will count as an exhibition game for the program. Last season, Georgia College finished 11-17 overall and 7-15 in Peach Belt Conference play.
GAME PROMOTIONS
It's Kids Day presented by Great Clips at TD Arena and the first 200 kids will receive a free mini basketball hoop. Kids Day activities will take place pre-game in the practice gym and all kids will be invited down on the court after the game for autographs with the team.
COUGARS ON THE AIRWAVES
Fans can listen to all CofC men's basketball games throughout the 2018-19 season on ESPN Radio 910 AM and 94.7 FM in Charleston or via a live audio link at: www.charlestonsportsradio.com. COUGAR SOUND BITES
"It's just the next game on our schedule. We've had some time to prepare and figure out how we can get better. There are a lot of things we can get better at and improve on. I'm happy we got six to seven days to do it and give our guys some time off. I played against my alma mater once before when I was at Winthrop years ago, so it won't be the first time that I will see that (Bobcats) jersey from the opposite bench. They are having a good season so far and we have to be prepared on Sunday." – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant on playing against his alma mater Georgia College post-final exams
"You have a lot of time during the day, where you can practice early or later, depending on the exam schedule. You go shorter (in practice) and really try to teach and figure out ways that you can get better, improve and master the system defensively and offensively. But most importantly, we make sure that they get rest and study time, which is huge for us during this time of the year." – Coach Grant on balancing the players' time during final exams with practice
"Last year, we were fourth in the country in ball care. We didn't turn it over. That's a big and important key for us – taking care of the ball. We try to defend, rebound and take care of the ball. If you do those three things, you will always have a chance to have a good shot at the basket and a lot of good things can happen. I was proud to see us protect the ball the way we did and we have to continue to build on that." – Coach Grant on the team's season-low four turnovers in the Charlotte game
