DeLand, Fla. – College of Charleston scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to erase a 4-0 deficit in a 6-4 win over Kansas before completing an outstanding opening day performance at the Stetson Leadoff Classic with a 10-0, five-inning victory over the host Hatters.
The Cougars wrap up play at the tournament Sunday with another game against Kansas at 10 a.m. followed immediately by a contest against Akron.
Taylor DuPree dropped a two-run single into right to cap Charleston's second straight three-run frame in the victory over the Jayhawks. Freshman Gracyn Thrasher had tied it two batters earlier with a fielder's choice grounder for her first career RBI.
The Cougars trailed 4-0 before Dexlie Inman started the comeback with a one-out double in the fifth. Yari Felix singled in Inman with her third hit of the game, and DuPree scored on the same play on an error. Jordin Jones singled Felix to third, and Taylor Belfiore made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly.
Freshman Kylie Burke relieved Izzy Berouty in the fourth after Erin McGinley doubled in two runs to give Kansas its four-run cushion. Burke escaped a bases loaded jam that inning and went on to toss 2 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief to earn the win in her college debut. Berouty returned in the seventh to strand two runners and pick up her fifth career save.
Summer Jenkins highlighted the win over Stetson, allowing only two hits in 3 2/3 innings after Brittany Violette left the game with one out in the second. Jenkins worked out of a two-on, one-out jam that inning and induced a 4-6-3 double play after the Hatters put their first two batters on in the third.
The Cougars scored the only runs they would need in the first on a double by Jones and an RBI single by Belfiore. Freshman Lauren Lozano celebrated her first college game with a home run in a three-run third, and Belfiore finished a four-RBI day with a two-run double in a four-run fourth that blew the game wide open.
DuPree contributed four hits, scored two runs and drove in three in the two games while stealing her school-record 75th career base. Freshman Alondra Vicary had two hits, and twin sister Brittany walked three times and scored twice against Stetson.
