Clearwater, Fla. – Jordin Jones drove in six runs to back the complete game pitching of Summer Jenkins and Izzy Berouty as the College of Charleston defeated Wright State and Western Michigan on the first day of the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
Jones and Lexee Emanuel hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to break open a close game in an 11-4 win over Wright State. Jones then drove in four runs including a clutch three-run double in a 9-3 victory over Western Michigan to help the Cougars improve to 9-5.
Charleston continues tournament play on Saturday with games against Wisconsin (10 a.m.) and Penn (12:30 p.m.) and wraps up the weekend against Central Michigan on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
The Cougars spotted Wright State a 4-1 lead in the second before scoring 10 unanswered runs. Alondra Vicary recorded her first career RBI, and Yari Felix drove in a run with a single to make it 4-3 in the second. An inning later, Charleston capitalized on a pair of Raider errors for two runs to go in front.
In the fifth, Jones followed a leadoff single by Sara Garcia with a two-run homer to left, her second of the season and 18th of her career, the eighth-most in school history. Emanuel then slammed a solo shot for her first of the year to build the Cougar lead to 8-4.
Brittany Vicary joined her twin sister with her first career RBI, and fellow freshman Gracyn Thrasher ripped a two-run pinch hit single in the sixth to cap the scoring. Jenkins went the distance in the circle for the second time this season, allowing five hits and all four of the runs against her were unearned.
The Cougars built a 5-0 lead against Western Michigan with a run in the third and four more in the fifth, including an RBI single by Kelly Sinclair and a bases loaded double by Jones. The Broncos bunched together four hits to score three times in the fifth, but Charleston put it away with four insurance runs in the seventh.
Sinclair and Taylor Belfiore had run-scoring singles, and Jones and Garcia had sacrifice flies to give Berouty breathing room in the bottom of the seventh. The sophomore finished off the Broncos for her fifth complete game of the year while improving her record to 6-1.
