Harrisonburg, Va. – Summer Jenkins tossed a five-hitter for her second shutout in the past two weeks, and Gracyn Thrasher hit her first career home run to lead the College of Charleston to a 4-0 win over UNCW to advance to the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
The Cougars were then eliminated with a 15-0 loss to No. 22 James Madison. Charleston finishes the season with a record of 31-27 while the Dukes will need to defeat Hofstra twice on Friday to earn their third straight CAA title.
Jenkins picked up her 12th win and ended the season allowing only three earned runs in 29.2 innings over her last six appearances, lowering her final ERA to 3.08. She also shut out Towson on April 29 and earned a save with three innings of scoreless relief in the tournament opener against the Seahawks.
The sophomore worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the first and stranded two runners in third and seventh. She benefited from a diving catch by Yari Felix in shallow center and a diving stab of a grounder at third by Taylor DuPree that resulted in a force play that ended a UNCW threat.
The Cougars scored the only run they would need in the second on four straight walks, the last drawn by DuPree with the bases loaded. Thrasher slammed a solo shot to left in the fourth, and Charleston added two in the fifth on an RBI single by Madi Brown and an error.
Brown finished the tournament with five hits including two home runs against James Madison on Wednesday, a double, four runs scored and five RBI.
DuPree concluded the season with 76 hits and a batting average of .400 – both good for third in school history – and started the final 204 games of her career. She holds school records for at bats (713), plate appearances (824), hits (274), batting average (.384), runs scored (168) and stolen bases (92) and is first in CAA history in hits and average, tied for first in runs and third in steals.
