CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's basketball program welcomes two newcomers as part of its 2020 signing class.
D'Avian Houston (pronounced DAY-vee-ON), a 6-foot-1, 185-pound point guard out of Episcopal High School in Bellaire, Texas, signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Cougars beginning in the fall of 2020 in addition to RJ Ogom (pronounced OH-gum), a 6-foot-5, 210-pound power forward out of Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Chicago, Ill.
"We are extremely excited that RJ and D'Avian are joining our program," CofC Head Coach Earl Grant said. "Both are high-character individuals and come from winning programs."
Last season, Houston led the Episcopal Knights to a 23-9 overall record and to the Southwest Prep Conference championship game under head coach Wayne Jones.
During his sophomore year, he played in 32 games for Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, Texas, and averaged 5.5 points, 1.5 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game for the Panthers.
Houston goes by the nickname, "DA," and chose CofC over Longwood and Sam Houston State. This past May, he led his AAU Cooz Elite squad to a 3-1 record at the Dallas Under Armour Rise Session averaging 11 points, four assists and two steals per game.
"D'Avian is a tough, physical, defensive-minded guard," Grant said. "He has a high basketball IQ and is a great decision maker. He does a great job of attacking the paint and using his body to finish. One of his biggest strengths is shooting the 3-point shot."
Last year, Ogom led the Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings to a 23-8 overall record and to the Class 4A sectional finals. The team is currently ranked No. 17 among Chicago area schools in the NBC Sports Chicago Preps Basketball Power Rankings.
He was tabbed one of "five rising seniors ready to emerge" by the Chicago Sun Times this past summer. Ogom played for the AAU All In Athletics squad on the adidas circuit averaging 11.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. He chose CofC over Mount St. Mary's and Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW).
"RJ is a big, physical forward, who has a knack for rebounding and finishing around the basket," Grant said. "He has broad shoulders and is really athletic. His ability to shoot the 3 will allow him to play inside and out."
