Statesboro, Ga. – Drayton Siegling and Summer Jenkins combined to allow only five hits, but two of them were run-scoring singles by Mekhia Freeman in a 2-1 Georgia Southern victory on Wednesday at Eagle Field.
Charleston (18-21) took a 1-0 lead in its first at bat when Noel Dominguez was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out single by Jenna Helberg. But the Cougars could not come through with runners on base the rest of the way, stranding a total of 10 including seven in scoring position.
Lexee Emanuel gave the Cougars a final chance in the seventh with a leadoff pinch-hit single. Yari Felix re-entered to run and was sacrificed to second before Rylee Waldrep retired the final two batters to pick up the save.
Siegling set down the side in order in the first two innings, but the Eagles reached her for a run in the third and had a runner at second in the fifth when Jenkins came in to pitch. Freeman put Georgia Southern in front with a single, the only hit Jenkins allowed in her 1.2 innings, and the Cougars could not answer.
Siegling went the first 4.2 innings and surrendered four hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter. Alondra Vicary reached base three times and stole the first two bases of her career.
Charleston returns to Colonial Athletic Association play at Towson this weekend.
