Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Anna Steinmetz hit a three-run homer in the top of the first, and Delaware made the lead hold up in a 4-2 win over the College of Charleston on Sunday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (22-28, 6-12 CAA) threatened to pull the game out in the seventh when Yari Felix and Noel Dominguez singled with two outs. But Sarah Piening retired Brittany Vicary on a fly ball to center to give the Blue Hens (21-26, 7-11) two of three in the CAA series.
Felix and Dominguez both had two of Charleston's seven hits. Four Cougar pitchers surrendered seven Delaware hits, with the bullpen trio of Drayton Siegling, Kylie Burke and Izzy Berouty allowing only four of those safeties in 6.2 innings.
The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the first on a double by Vicary and a Chandler Sparkman RBI single. It stayed a 3-1 game until the fifth when Dexlie Inman tucked a fly ball just inside the left field foul pole for her first home run of the season and fourth of her career.
Meanwhile, the relief corps held the Blue Hens in check. Siegling worked a pair of 1-2-3 innings, and Berouty escaped a bases loaded jam in the fifth before retiring the side in order in the sixth. Delaware was able to tack on an insurance run in the seventh on a double by Brooke Glanden.
The Cougars conclude the regular season next week against UNCW at Patriots Point. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 5:00., and a single game on Saturday at 2:00. Saturday will be Senior Day, with the team honoring Kelly Sinclair, Madi Brown and Jordan Barcus following the game.
