Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – A game of near misses ended in appropriate fashion as the College of Charleston dropped a 3-2 decision to Elon in the Colonial Athletic Association series opener at Patriots Point.
Only one game was played on Saturday as a result of intermittent rain that forced an hour delay before the game and another of an hour and a half after the fourth inning. The series concludes with a doubleheader at noon on Sunday.
Alondra Vicary opened the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit double and Noel Dominguez, who re-entered for Vicary, was at third with two outs when Kelly Sinclair was robbed of a game-tying RBI on a diving catch by Elon's Rebecca Murray in center.
The Cougars (17-19, 2-5 CAA) were also left frustrated in the second when a Madi Brown drive to the warning track in right center was hauled in to leave a pair of runners in scoring position. Brown also missed at least a double by a couple feet in the sixth when her line drive to right went just foul.
The Phoenix (20-14-1, 4-3 CAA) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on a bases-clearing double by Callie Horn. But the Charleston pitching combination of Izzy Berouty and Drayton Siegling held Elon in check the rest of the way as the Cougars attempted to rally.
The Cougars got a run back in the third on a single by Yari Felix and a triple by Sinclair, giving the senior shortstop three extra base hits in her last three games, and Gracyn Thrasher singled and came around on a double by Brown to cut it to a one-run game in the fourth.
But Charleston left two on in the fifth before seeing their last attempt at pulling the game out short circuited in the seventh.
