Seventh Inning Rally Thwarted in Loss to Northern Illinois

Conway, S.C. – The College of Charleston scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had two on with two outs before Northern Illinois held on for a 3-2 victory to conclude the opening day of the Battle at the Beach.
Payton Wade had three hits including two doubles, and Alondra Vicary added an RBI single to pace the Cougars at the plate. Ginna Leaphart doubled as a pinch hitter to lead off the seventh and a run scored on an NIU error before the rally fell short.
Summer Jenkins came in to relieve starter Drayton Siegling in the fifth and tossed three innings of two-hit shutout ball. Siegling scattered seven hits in four innings but was able to escape several jams, stranding five runners in scoring position.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring sacrifice bunt, and Anne Allen singled in a pair in the fourth. Two walks and a double by Wade loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars had to settle for only one run on the single by Vicary.
Charleston plays twice on Saturday, taking on Jacksonville State at 4:15 and Delaware State at 6:30.
