CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston pitchers allowed only five runs in 14 innings but came out on the short end of a doubleheader against Cleveland State by scores of 2-0 and 3-1 on Sunday at Patriots Point.
Carli McCants went the distance in the opener and gave up one earned run on six hits but was outdueled by Hannah Griffin, who tossed a five-hit shutout. Noel Dominguez and Riley Miller both had two hits for the Cougars (0-4).
CofC threatened in the sixth when Dominguez singled and Kayla Gutierrez reached on an error. The duo advanced on a fly out but were stranded when Griffin retired the final two batters of the inning. Miller doubled with one out in the seventh but again the Cougars couldn't dent the scoreboard.
Payton Wade doubled in a run in first inning of the nightcap before the Vikings (4-4) rallied for three runs in the second. CofC had several opportunities to add to its total but left 10 on base including eight in scoring position.
Kylie Burke worked the final three innings in relief of starter Katie Freeman and allowed only two hits while striking out four. Burke threw a total of 10 innings over the weekend and gave up five hits and one run with 11 punchouts.
The Cougars are back in action next weekend with five games at the Winthrop Garnet/Gold Classic in Rock Hill, S.C.
