CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston makes the short trip to Statesboro, Ga., this weekend for two games each against Winthrop and host Georgia Southern at the Eagle Round Robin.
On Saturday, the Cougars play Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m. and Winthrop at 6 p.m. The following day, the opponents are reversed with the game against Winthrop at 10 a.m. and Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m.
CofC won twice last weekend at the Garnet/Gold Classic, including a 3-2 win over Mount St. Mary's in which freshman Lauren Sandor tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts. That earned her the CAA Pitcher of the Week award, joining Kylie Burke as Cougars who have received the honor this spring.
Burke has a 2.62 ERA and has struck out a team-leading 15 in 18.2 innings, and Carli McCants has a 2.33 ERA. Jenna Helberg (.421), Riley Miller (.364, 4 doubles, 4 RBI) and Payton Wade (.333, 3 doubles, 1 home run and 4 RBI) pace the offense.
Georgia Southern is 1-7 but three of those losses were against No. 5 Florida, and five of the Eagles' defeats have been by one run. Faith Shirley (.448, 5 doubles, 1 homer, 4 RBI), Bailee Wilson (.407, 5 doubles, 5 RBI) and Mekhia Freeman (2 triples, 6 RBI) are the top Eagle hitters.
Winthrop is 7-6 with an offense that has produced 14 home runs. Ansley Gilreath is batting .472 with three homers and 13 RBI, and Madyson Watson has four long balls. Watson is also the ace of the pitching staff with 66 strikeouts in 45 innings while Aisha Wiexlmann has four wins and 26 strikeouts.
