STATESBORO, GA. –
College of Charleston was edged by host Georgia Southern, 2-1, on a run in the bottom of the seventh before losing a 9-0 decision to Winthrop on the first day of the Eagle Round Robin in Statesboro, Ga.

Kylie Burke struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings against Georgia Southern but was beaten in a pitcher's duel when Ashlynn Gunter singled in Ashleigh Duty with one out in the seventh. Burke has 23 strikeouts in 25 innings so far this season.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second on a triple by Riley Miller and RBI single by Shealyn Starks. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Eagles tied it when Gunter had the first of her two RBI.

Winthrop had a 3-0 lead in the fifth when CofC threatened on singles by Aniz Roman and Mia Dittoe and a wild pitch but left both runners in scoring position.

The Eagles then ended the game in their half of the fifth with six runs, capped by a three-run homer by Ansley Gilreath. Dittoe had two singles against Winthrop and led the Cougars with three hits on the day.

CofC plays Winthrop on Sunday at 10 a.m. and Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m.
