Pitching Carries Seahawks Past Cougars in Series Finale

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Two UNCW pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Seahawks to a 6-0 win over College of Charleston in the finale of their three-game series Sunday at Patriots Point.
Rylee Pate allowed three hits over five innings, and Janel Gamache gave up only one walk in two innings to give the Seahawks the sweep. Mia Dittoe had two of the Cougars' three hits, and Aniz Roman led off the bottom of the first with a triple.
In addition to leaving Roman at third in the opening frame, CofC put two on in the third and stranded Dittoe at second after a single and stolen base in the fourth. Overall the Cougars left seven runners on base.
UNCW scored the only run it would need in the third on an inside-the-park home run by Gabriella Hessenthaler. It stayed 1-0 until the fifth when the Seahawks opened it up with three runs, all coming with two outs.
The Cougars conclude their 12-game homestand with a Tuesday doubleheader against Presbyterian beginning at 3 p.m.
