CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian gave the Cougars all they had for the second straight year, but the Cougars held on to secure the 67-62 road victory.
Charleston took an early 6-3 lead before an 8-1 Presbyterian run pushed the Blue Hose out in front 10-8.
Pat Robinson III ended the run with back-to-back driving buckets to cut the lead to six at 18-12. Both teams went cold offensively, going three minutes with a point for either squad before a
Babacar Faye layup brought CofC within four with nine minutes to go.
Points from the charity stripe helped the Cougars come within two at 20-18 after successful trips by
Reyne Smith and
Ante Brzovic. Back-to-back treys from
Raekwon Horton pushed Charleston to their first lead since 16:37 in the first frame with just under five minutes to play at 26-24.
Charleston closed out the half on a 6-0 run to enter the locker room up 32-27.
Presbyterian committed six fouls in the first three minutes of the second half. The calls started to pile on the Cougars shortly after with both teams entering the bonus with 12 minutes remaining.
The Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, tied their largest lead of the game at 43-38 on a Smith layup and held steady to grab a seven-point edge on a
Ryan Larson layup at 48-41.
Horton tied his season-high 11 points on back-to-back driving layups before a Larson fast break three and Robinson III layup gave the Cougars a ten-point advantage at 61-51. Horton set a new season-high shortly after his third three of the night.
The Cougars maintained the lead throughout the scrappy contest for their eighth straight victory to move to 9-1 on the season.
