Cougars Continue Road Swing at Delaware Thursday Night

CofC seeks a fourth road win its last five away games

2/23/2022 2:55:00 PM

NEWARK, DEL. - The Cougars head to Newark, Delaware, to take on the Blue Hens on Thursday night in a rematch of a 1-point thriller at TD Arena on Dec. 31. Tip-off at Delaware is set for 7 p.m. ET on FloSports.

STORYLINES
  • CofC continues its long road swing when the Cougars head to Delaware to face the Blue Hens on Thursday night. CofC has won three of its last four road games, beating William & Mary, Elon and Northeastern all in the month of February. The Cougars now have six true road wins, matching their total from 2019-20. CofC has at least six true road wins in every normal-length season since 2015-16.
  • The Cougars blitzed Northeastern to the tune of 83 points and completed a season-sweep of the Huskies for the second time in program history and the first time since 2018. CofC outpaced Northeastern by 29 combined points over the two meetings, shooting 58 percent of the field in both contests, the best two shooting performances of Charleston's season.
  • CofC now turns to its matchup with Delaware after the Blue Hens escaped TD Arena with a 67-66 victory back on Dec. 31. That nailbiter was one of 12 conference matchups for the Cougars to be decided by single digits. Since that loss, Charleston is 4-2 in games decided by four or fewer points.
  • Charleston is 13-8 all-time against Delaware. The Cougars have won five of the last six meetings with the Blue Hens in Newark, including a 66-59 road win a season ago. CofC is looking to avoid its first season sweep at the hands of Delaware for the first time since 2015.
  • Entering Thursday, senior Dimitrius Underwood is riding an astounding 3-game stretch in which he's averaging 18.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.3 steals. He has two double-doubles and narrowly missed a triple-double with 18 points, eight boards and eight assists at Northeastern. He is the second Cougar in that last decade to reach those marks in the same game alongside Grant Riller.
  • Underwood has 60 steals, the 10th player in CofC history to reach that mark in a season and just the second Cougar to do so since 2000. He heads into Thursday's game at Delaware needing eight more assists to post the first 60-steal, 100-assist season at CofC since 1998.
  • Freshmen Reyne Smith hit four threes at Northeastern to collect his 10th game this season with at least four triples. He has 74 threes during his freshman season, which broke the all-time freshmen record at The College for threes in a season (Goudelock). He ranks ninth all-time regardless of class.
  • Fellow freshman Ben Burnham was featured on Sportscenter's Top 10 after a poster dunk at Northeastern. He is on a tear recently as well, chipping in nearly nine points per game on 45 percent shooting since Jan. 20. Between Burnham and Smith, CofC has eight CAA Rookie of the Week honors this season. A freshman has scored at least 10 points in 23 of CofC's 27 games.
  • CofC continues to dominate the glass, bouncing back from the Towson game to outrebound Northeastern, 30-19. The Cougars rank third in the country in offensive rebounding.
  • CofC's bench has outscored opponents' reserves by 123 combined points over the last seven games.
