
Cougars Drop Two Narrow Contests at Hofstra Despite Big Day from Jenna Helberg

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – College of Charleston held leads in both ends of a doubleheader but came out on the short end of 9-7 and 4-3 games against Hofstra on Saturday.
The Cougars and Pride wrap up their CAA series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
Charleston took a 4-1 lead in the third inning of the opener on an error and RBI hits by Payton Wade and Mia Dittoe. Hofstra responded with seven runs in its next two times at bat to build an 8-4 lead.
The Cougars answered back in the sixth with a three-run homer by Jenna Helberg to cut the deficit to one. After the Pride scored in the bottom of the sixth, Charleston got two runners into scoring position in the seventh but were unable to get them in.
Jenna Carter had three hits, drew a walk and scored three times. Carli McCants went the first four innings and struck out six, and Payton Lemire fanned three in two innings of relief.
Helberg homered for the second time in the twinbill to lead off the seventh inning of the second game to create a 3-3 tie, but Hofstra won it with a run in its half of the frame. Helberg increased her team-leading totals to five home runs and 19 RBI.
Malaka Belser singled in a run in the third inning, but Hofstra scored three times in the fifth for a 3-1 lead. Mia Dittoe blasted a solo shot in the sixth to make it a one-run game and set the stage for the seventh inning drama. Dittoe and Helberg also had doubles in addition to their homers in game two.
Drayton Siegling went the distance and struck out six. Carter walked two more times, putting her on base six times in the doubleheader, and is now batting .385 with an on-base percentage of .524.
