
Cougars Rally in Seventh to Gain Doubleheader Split at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston scored three times in the top of the seventh and held on in the bottom of the frame for a 5-4 win over Elon and a split of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Phoenix won the opener, 3-0. The teams play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Cougars trailed 3-2 heading to the seventh when Noel Dominguez singled and Payton Wade was hit by a pitch. An error on a bunt by Jenna Carter brought home the tie run, Jenna Helberg gave Charleston the lead with a sacrifice fly, and a passed ball capped the uprising.
Elon scored a run in the bottom of the seventh before Payton Lemire relieved starter Drayton Siegling and got the final two outs for her second save. Siegling went 6.1 innings and struck out five for the win.
Charleston scored single runs on an RBI groundout by Mia Dittoe in the first, and a Dittoe double and Windham grounder in the fourth. Elon scored two runs in the sixth to go ahead before the Cougar rally.
The Cougars only got three hits in the first game but were able to draw five walks. They threatened in the first with two on and nobody out and loaded the bases on walks in the third but were unable to break through.
The Phoenix broke up a pitching duel in the fifth on a three-run homer by Gabi Schaal off Carli McCants, who fanned five in five innings. Lemire also appeared in the opener and struck out two in her one inning.
Helberg had singles in both games to run her hitting streak to eight games.
