WILMINGTON, N.C. – Carli McCants established a career high with 13 strikeouts and limited UNCW to only one hit in a 3-1 victory over the Seahawks on Sunday.
McCants eclipsed her previous best strikeout game of 12 set against SC State a year ago. She fanned 21 batters in 13 innings in two complete games over the weekend while allowing just four hits and one earned run.
The Cougars backed her with a three-run fifth to wipe out a 1-0 deficit. With the bases loaded and two outs, Shealyn Starks and Kayla Gutierrez had RBI singles and Natalie Windham was hit by a pitch to force in another run.
McCants got her day off in style with three strikeouts in the first and two more in the second. She also recorded three punchouts in the fourth, two more in the sixth and ended the game with No. 13 with the tying run at the plate.
"Carli threw a great game and had her best back-to-back appearances of the season," said head coach Tracey Lynch. "I was proud of the adjustments she made to keep their hitters off balance and remain in control the entire game.
"I was also excited to see our team respond after going down 1-0. We trusted our approach and made the adjustments we needed to make to come back today."
The Cougars play five home games next week starting with a doubleheader against Winthrop on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Charleston returns to CAA play on Friday and Saturday against Towson.
