MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team fell to Vermont in the opening round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational 73-64.
After a Catamount triple to open the game, the Cougars scored seven straight highlighted by a dagger from behind the arc by
Ben Burnham. Vermont matched the Cougars with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 12-9 edge.
A Vermont shot clock violation 11 minutes in triggered four straight Catamount turnovers before a
Bryce Butler old fashioned three-point play provided the Cougars offensive spark to a 22-4 run to enter the locker room up 36-27. Charleston outshot Vermont 43.8% to 32.0% in the frame while outrebounding the Catamounts 20-15.
The Cougars struggled from the field in the second half going four minutes without a basket as Vermont cut the lead to three at 45-42. Back-to-back buckets from
Ben Burnham and
Ante Brzovic sparked a 12-2 run in favor of the Cougars.
Vermont took their first lead since 3-0 at 61-60 with three minutes remaining, outscoring the Cougars 23-7 in the final five minutes of play to complete the comeback victory.
The win marks the first for the Catamounts over the Cougars in program history. The remaining statistics will be provided as soon as they are available.
