CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Reyne Smith broke the CofC single game three-point record as the Charleston Cougars defeated Saint Joseph's 89-82 on Thursday night at TD Arena.
Ben Burnham and
Kobe Rodgers provided an offensive spark early, scoring seven and six points respectively within the first four minutes of the game.
The Cougars went on a 17-2 run while the Hawks struggled from the field, going nearly five minutes without a basket to give Charleston a 25-10 edge with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
St. Joe's responded to go on a 7-0 run of their own until a Burnham three snapped the streak. Back-to-back Smith threes helped send the Cougars to the locker room up 41-30. Burnham ended the frame with ten points and six rebounds while Smith had 14 points.
Smith scored three more treys out of the locker room to help Charleston stay in front of the Hawks. St. Joe's came within two of the Cougars before an
Ante Brzovic floater and
Frankie Policelli triple forced a St. Joe's timeout with the Cougars up 63-56.
Smith continued to drain the shot from deep, sinking his ninth three of the night to set a new program single-game record.
The Cougars ended the game going 9-for-11 from the field to secure the victory to enter the holiday break.
KEY COUGARS
- Smith had a career-high 31 points, the most scored by a Cougar this season.
- Burnham ended the night with 16 points and 6 rebounds while Brzovic contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds. Rodgers was the fourth Cougar in double-digits with ten points.
- Bryce Butler recorded his 2,000th career point on a trip to the charity stripe.
GAME NOTES
- This victory marks Charleston's second A10 win of the season. The team previously defeated Rhode Island at home.
- The Cougars outrebounded the Hawks 47-36 and grabbed their highest total of the season.
- Charleston continued to prove why they are one of the nation's deepest teams, outscoring the Hawks bench 43-15.
