CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston pitching allowed only six runs across two games but dropped decisions to Rutgers and Syracuse on the first day of the Low Country Classic at Patriots Point.
The Cougars got 4.2 innings of five-hit work from Drayton Siegling in a 3-0 loss to Rutgers in their first game. Payton Lemire followed Siegling and limited the Scarlet Knights to one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Aniz Roman and Malaka Belser singled in the first, but Rutgers pitcher Raimy Gamsby held the Cougars without a hit the rest of the way. The game was scoreless until the Scarlet Knights tallied single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Charleston then lost to the Orange, 3-2, despite taking an early 2-0 lead. Roman and Karlee Hughes singled and Brooke Tranum was hit by a pitch to start the first, but the Cougars could score only once on a wild pitch.
Roman singled again in the second to load the bases, and a run came across on a catcher's interference. Charleston had chances to break the game open but stranded eight runners over the first three innings.
Lemire started and held Syracuse scoreless until giving up three in the fifth. Caroline Conner worked two innings of one-hit, shutout relief.
The Cougars continue play on Saturday with games against Rutgers and Robert Morris beginning at 3 p.m.
