STONY BROOK, NY. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team completed the comeback effort against Stony Brook for their seventh consecutive win.
The Cougars had early miscues on the offensive side of the ball, going nearly four minutes without a basket until a
Bryce Butler three broke the drought to make it 18-11 Seawolves.
Charleston took their first lead of the contest on a
CJ Fulton triple with eight minutes to play in the first half. Stony Brook responded with a 13-2 run before former Seawolf
Frankie Policelli stopped the momentum with a three-pointer for his points of the evening.
After Stony Brook took their largest lead of the game at 45-30 with two minutes to play,
Pat Kelsey's squad went on a 8-0 run to cut the deficit and enter the locker room down 45-38.
Reyne Smith led the Cougars with 11 points in the opening frame.
Charleston stormed out of the locker room to tie the contest six minutes into the second half. The teams traded baskets from that point on with neither group able to take more than a three-point lead. Both teams were shooting over 50% from the field with five minutes left to play.
Two made free throws from Smith and a Brzovic jumper in the paint pushed the Cougar advantage to 87-81 with just under two minutes to play, the largest lead for the Cougars of the game. The edge was enough for Charleston to hold on to the 93-87 win.
KEY COUGARS
- Five Cougars scored in double-digits led by Smith with 20. Kobe Rodgers contributed a season-high 19 followed by Brzovic with 18, Butler with 14 and Fulton with 13, another season-high.
- Policelli had a game-high six rebounds while Brzovic added a season-high six assists.
STORYLINES
- The Charleston bench outscored Stony Brook 33-14 and shot over 50% from the field for the first time this season.
- Charleston made 13 threes, their eighth time making 10 or more this season.
- The Cougars perfect slate against Stony Brook remains intact, owning the 6-0 all-time record.
