MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team split the second day of the Cougar Classic with a 4-0 win over South Carolina State and a 10-5 loss to Oakland
Payton Lemire pitched her fourth career shutout and picked up her third win of the season. The fifth year only allowed two hits with no walks after retiring the first 17 batters of the game.
Malaka Belser drove in the first run of the game in the third, marking her third straight game with an RBI.
Kaytlin Stacey tripled to lead off the fifth inning, and Aniz Roman followed up with an RBI single. Belser reached base on a fielding error that allowed Roman to score and take a 3-0 lead for the Cougars.
Savannah Lockhart hit a lead-off double in the sixth and was driven home by fellow rookie Stacey's sacrifice fly to secure the fourth run.
The Cougars scored first against the Golden Grizzlies in the third inning courtesy of a Brooke Marquez sacrifice fly, but Oakland responded the following inning with four runs.
Lockhart hit her first career home run to lead off the fifth inning, yet the Golden Grizzlies followed up with another four-run frame and two more in the seventh.Â
CofC loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, allowing Belser to drive in one run before Halle Cannon hit a two-RBI double, but the late rally fell short.
