CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston Baseball opens up CAA play this weekend with North Carolina A&T at Patriots Point. The Friday opener will now begin at 4:00 p.m. after the original start time was moved up from 6:00 p.m. due to weather concerns.
The Cougars sit at 13-6 on the season after picking up a win at Georgia Southern earlier this week. A&T is off to a 15-5 start to the season and winners of four straight after sweeping George Mason and knocking off UNC - Greensboro during the week. The Cougars are 10-3 all-time against the Aggies, including taking two-of-three in East Greensboro last season.
Last Time Out
The Cougars picked up a key midweek win at Georgia Southern on Tuesday. Daniel Brooks got the start, working 2.0 innings and giving up one run. Freshman Hayden Thomas pitched 3.0 innings of shutout relief. The Charleston bats traveled well with 14 hits in the game. Luke Wood got things started with a two-run homer to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the 2nd. In the 3rd, Cole Singsank stayed hot with a solo homer to make it a 3-1 game. Singsank has homered in back-to-back games and now has a longball in five of the Cougars last seven games.
Leading 5-3 in the 8th, Charleston got RBI doubles from Cole Mathis and Trotter Harlan to make it a 7-3 game. Georgia Southern cut the lead to one in the bottom half before Davis Aiken came in to get the final out of the inning. A Dylan Johnson sac-fly provided some insurance to put the Cougs up 8-6 into the bottom of the 9th. Aiken mowed down the Eagles to lock up the win and a four-out save.
Scouting the Aggies
A&T owns sweeps of Maryland Eastern-Shore, Eastern Illinois and George Mason on the season. The Aggies also enjoyed a 2-1 weekend in the Andre Dawson Classic, picking up victories against Southern and Grambling State. They have also gone 4-2 in midweek games with defeats against Davidson and nationally ranked Wake Forest.
The Aggies have been clutch as of late with comeback victories in their last three games. After winning the George Mason opener 14-5, A&T got a walk-off three run shot from Michael Logan to win game two, 5-4. In the series finale, they trailed 8-4 heading into the bottom of the 8th before rallying for six runs to take the lead and win 10-9. They found themselves down in the 8th again against Greensboro before tying the game at two. In the 11th, Devon Rodriguez came through with a walk-off single to secure a 3-2 win.
Logan (.411) and Tatsunori Negishi (.403) lead the team in hitting with Negishi clubbing a team-high three homers and leading the team in walks with 15.
