
Softball Heads to Athens for NCAA Regional

ATHENS, GA. – Charleston softball will travel to Athens, Ga. to take on No. 3 Georgia in the NCAA Regionals on Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m.
No. 6 Clemson and UNC Greensboro will join the Cougars and Bulldogs in Athens.
Charleston clinched the automatic bid to the tournament after defeating Hofstra 5-0 in the CAA Championship game. The victory marked the program's first ever CAA title.
Charleston are 30-28 on the season. In the regular season, the Cougars went 14-10 in conference play for a five seed in the postseason conference tournament. Charleston won all four games of the CAA tournament while defeating No. 1 seed Hofstra twice.
In the championship game, Mackenzie Mathis had a career high 13 strikeouts against the Pride and allowed just two hits. Throughout the tournament, Mathis pitched 20 innings allowing just one run. She had 23 strikeouts and walked only three batters.
Audri Bates went 3-for-3 against Hofstra on Saturday driving in three runs. She had one run in the victory over Campbell to send the Cougars to the championship game.
Austy Miller scored a run in each game of the tournament and has 27 runs total on the season. Miller was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team Saturday following the win.
Leading the Cougars in conference batting average is Halle Cannon gong .355 at the plate. She has scored 12 runs in league action with 22 hits. In the first two games of the tournament, Cannon hit two back-to-back two RBI home runs against Stony Brook and Hofstra. Her home run against Hofstra came in the top of the seventh as the teams were tied 2-2 to take the lead.
The last time Charleston was in the NCAA Tournament was 2005. The Cougars were the SoCon Champions for the automatic bid. Charleston was sent to the Knoxville regional and defeated Virginia Tech in the opening game 10-2. The Cougars then faced No. 11 Tennessee and fell 4-0. In the loser's bracket, CofC defeated Virginia Tech 6-3 before falling 2-0 to the Volunteers.
In program history, Charleston has played Georgia 12 times going 1-11 in the series. Most recently, the Cougars traveled to the Bulldogs in 2018 and fell 6-0. The lone win for CofC comes in 2016 when Charleston defeated Georgia 2-1 at Patriots Point.
