Shifflett homers to push CofC over Marist, 2-0 in eight

Mt. Pleasant, S.C -- The College of Charleston softball shutout Marist 2-0 in game eight innings of the CofC Invitational Saturday afternoon from Patriots Point.

The Cougars improve their record to 6-13, while the Red Foxes fall to 3-6.

The game remained scoreless through 7 complete innings, despite Charleston's eight-two hit advantage. Following international extra-innings rules, shortstop Christal Kotchman started on second in the top of the eight. After two outs by Tiffany Harmon and Kristi Woodall, Kristie Shifflett stepped to the plate. The Virginia Beach, Va., native smacked a two-out, two-run home straight to center to put the Cougars up 2-0.

Shifflett went 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored and two RBI. Freshman Alex Williams finished 2-for-3 on the day. Harmon, Shannon Howard, Katie Nutaitis and Christal Kotchman added the remaining four hits for the Cougars.

Howard (5-5), a junior Carmichael, Calif., native pitched a complete game striking out five batters through 22 at-bats. Megan Rigos (2-2) struck out eight Cougar batters with one earned run.

CofC returns to action at 4 p.m. when they face Akron. On the final day of the Invitational the Cougars play Howard at 2 p.m. followed by a contest against UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m.
