Iowa State's Alison Lacey scored 25 points, including five second-half three-pointers, to lead the 24th-ranked Cyclones to the 68-50 victory over the College of Charleston women's basketball team at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., as part of the Doubletree White Invitational.
Charleston's four-game win streak was snapped as the Cougars fell to 4-2 on the year. Iowa State improved to 3-1.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as neither team could establish much of an offense. For the half, the Cyclones shot 35.7 percent, while the Cougars were slightly better at 38.5 percent.
Iowa State led most of the first half but it was never by more than four until the 3:11 mark when the Cyclones increased their lead to six off a three-pointer by Kelsey Bolte. ISU scored only two more points in the first as Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) posted six of the half's final eight points to help the Cougars cut the margin to two at intermission and trailed, 26-24.
After Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fl.) cut the Cougar deficit to one to open the second half, 28-27, with 18:59 remaining, Iowa State responded with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take its first double-digit lead of the game, a 39-29 lead with 15:15 to go. Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) cut the margin to eight at 12:35 but it was all Iowa State after that, as the Cyclones outscored the Cougars 13-2 over the next five minutes and led, by 13, 51-38, with 7:39 remaining.
Jones made the margin nine with a jumper at 6:20 but the Cougars wouldn't get any further as they were outscored, 17-8, down the stretch to take the 68-50 loss.
The Cougars shot 38.5 percent from the field for the game, while the Cyclones shot 48.1 percent after firing 62.5 percent in the second half. ISU held the 34-29 edge in rebounds and had two less turnovers, 13-15.
Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the Cougars with 13 points, with Jones followed with 12 and her team-leading eight rebounds. Following Lacey and her 25 points was Anna Prins with 11. Bolte paced the team in rebounds with eight.
Iowa State, which only had four three-pointers in the first half, connected on six-of-10 in the second to end up 10-for-20 for the game. The Cougars could only muster three more in the second and went seven-for-18 overall.
The Cougars are next in action Wed., Dec. 2, at Coastal Carolina. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
