CHARLESTON, S.C. - Six Cougars reached double figures as the College of Charleston men's basketball team knocked off NCAA Division II Limestone College, 95-61, in its final exhibition game of the preseason on Saturday night at TD Arena.
Led by 15 points from sophomore Jordan Scott (Darlington, S.C.), the Cougars shot 49.4 percent from the field including 47.6 percent from three-point range. Scott also led the team with four assists. Sophomore Trent Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.) registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore James Carlton also notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards including eight on the offensive end.
Senior Antwaine Wiggins (Greeneville, Tenn.), freshman Anthony Stitt (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Trevonté Dixon (Florence, S.C.) rounded out the Cougars' balanced scoring attack with 14, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Josh Corry led Limestone with a game-high 21 points shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
The Cougars pulled away from Limestone midway through the first half, using several three-pointers from Scott to build a 45-27 lead at halftime. CofC forced eight first-half turnovers, eventually converting 15 of the Saints' miscues into 17 points.
CofC was also effective on the offensive glass, corralling 21 offensive boards and making 21 second-chance points. The Cougars outrebounded Limestone, 53-30.
Freshman Adjehi Baru (Abidjan, Ivory Coast) did not score in the first half after getting into early foul trouble, but exploded for nine points in the first 10 minutes of the second half of play.
The Cougars will next host Holy Cross in their official 2011-12 season home opener on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena. The game will be a part of a doubleheader with the CofC women's basketball team versus East Carolina at 5 p.m. (ET).
POSTGAME NOTES
• The Cougars are now 5-1 all-time in exhibition games played during the Bobby Cremins Era (2007-present). The team's 95 points versus Limestone College surpassed the previous highest-scoring production in an exhibition game by a Cremins-led CofC squad of 94 points scored against USC Aiken in 2009-10. It was also the largest margin of victory in an exhibition game for the Cougars (+34) under Cremins surpassing the team's 24-point blowout of Queens University of Charlotte on Oct. 29.
• CofC used the starting five of freshman Anthony Stitt, sophomore Jordan Scott, senior Antwaine Wiggins, sophomore Trent Wiedeman and freshman Adjehi Baru. It was the second consecutive start in exhibition play for Scott, Wiggins, Wiedeman and Baru.
• Junior point guard Andrew Lawrence did not dress out for the game as a precautionary measure as he recovers from a twisted ankle in preparation for the team's home opener against Holy Cross on Nov. 11.
• For the second-straight exhibition game, Jordan Scott led all CofC scorers with 15 points. He previously knocked down 23 versus Queens on Oct. 29.
• Trent Wiedeman was one of two Cougars to turn in a double-double performance with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Last year, Wiedeman led the team in the category with four double-doubles. Sophomore James Carlton also registered 10 points and 11 rebounds against the Saints.
POSTGAME QUOTES
College of Charleston Head Coach Bobby Cremins
On the game ...
"I appreciate Limestone for coming here to play us. Like the Queens game, we got off to a great start. When you get off to a great start like that it sets the tempo. That was our last exhibition game, and now, we are playing Division I games. Normally, we would only play one exhibition game and play one scrimmage, but my assistant coach promised Limestone and I promised Queens and we didn't tell each other. The competition now should go to a higher level. We are almost playing three games in one week considering the Friday game against Holy Cross, the 8 a.m. game against Morehead State and the Saturday game at Clemson. We have a big week coming up. It was a good crowd today and now, it gets real for us."
On starting freshman Anthony Stitt at point guard in place of junior Andrew Lawrence ...
"Stitt is our first sub. He's earned it. Stitt has done a fantastic job in the preseason. He's a gutty kid and plays tough defense. I can tell you right now, Stitt will be our first sub in the perimeter."
On the youth of the team ...
"Obviously, the inexperience is incredible for us this year. Trent (Wiedeman) was the only freshman with playing time last year. Jordan (Scott), James (Carlton) and Nori (Johnson) did not play at all. TD (Dixon) and Anthony (Stitt) are freshman. It is what it is and we have to go with it. We have four more days of practice and then we open up against Holy Cross and the season begins."
College of Charleston Sophomore Forward Trent Wiedeman
On his double-double performance and the balanced scoring ...
"I feel just as good as the team. Six players in double figures and another one with nine (points). Two double-doubles. You can't ask for better balance than that."
