
CofC Softball Sweeps Past Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. –The College of Charleston softball team swept its doubleheader with Loyola Marymount, earning a pair of victories, 4-3 and 7-4, at Smith Field on Friday afternoon.
“We played two games that forced us to grind out some wins”, said head coach Linda Kalafatis. “We haven't had a lot of close games this season, win-or-lose, that have forced us to play well at the end so it was good to see the players in that situation. We had solid pitching and timely hitting today. I'm glad we got to perform well in front of a full stands of fans.”
CofC (9-4 overall) received strong performances from the pitching staff, with Hope Klicker (4-3) pitching a complete game and Samantha Martin going six strong innings in game two.
Carly Hansis and Mackenzie Maples each had a home run in game 1 while Rebecca Mueller blasted one over left field in game 2.
The College will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 28 against Sacramento State at 2 p.m. ET and Cal State Northridge at 4:30 p.m. ET at Matador Diamond in Los Angeles, Calif.
Game 1: CofC 4, LMU 3 | Box Score
In game one, the Cougars used the long ball and great pitching to defeat the Lions. Hope Klicker pitched a complete game, adding 10 strikeouts and no walks.
CofC first got on the board in the second inning, after Victoria Bratcher brought in Chandler Frisbie on a single to left field.
Rebecca Mueller would get things started in the third with a leadoff triple. The next at bat, Carly Hansis took a pitch deep to left center for her second home run of the season and extended the Cougar lead to 3-0. The lead would increase to, 4-0, after Mackenzie Maples led the fifth inning off with a home run to right field.
The Lions would answer in the bottom of the sixth after five shutout innings from Klicker. Amanda Dirks plated an RBI single for the Lions followed by a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Crist to cut the lead 4-2. After a passed ball brought the score to, 4-3, Klicker registered her 10th strikeout of the game to get out of the inning.
Game 2: CofC 7, LMU 4 | Box Score
In game two, the Cougars had strong performances from Carly Hansis and Sara Garcia, plating 2 RBI's a piece. Samantha Martin improved to 4-1 on the season with a strong outing.
The Cougars opened the game surrendering a home run to Stephanie Maciel in the first inning, creating a quick 1-0 deficit.
CofC would respond in the third inning after a Maples walk. Four straight singles by Hansis, Sara Garcia, Katie Padilla, and Chandler Frisbie would plate three runs, giving the Cougars a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Hansis singled to right field scoring Taylor DuPree and Victoria Bratcher. Garcia would follow that up with a sacrifice fly that scored Mueller, increasing the lead to 6-1.
Loyola Marymount would chip away at the lead but Rebecca Mueller put all comeback hopes to rest with a solo home run to left field in the sixth.
