Longhorns Down Cougars in Pitcher's Duel

Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Izzy Berouty turned in an outstanding performance in the circle but was outdueled by Texas' Paige von Sprecken as the Longhorns took a 1-0 win over the Cougars to wrap up the third day of the Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point.
Berouty blanked the perennial national power on only five hits before Texas parlayed a walk and pinch hit triple by Randel Leahy into the game's only run in the seventh. The Cougars dropped to 17-11 and finish up their 12-game homestand against Jacksonville State on Sunday at 12:15.
Charleston had several opportunities to break through against von Sprecken, who allowed seven hits in the shutout victory. The Cougars had two base runners in each of the first three innings, but a pickoff and failed suicide squeeze ended two of those threats.
Taylor Belfiore doubled with one out in the fourth, and Kelly Sinclair singled to lead off the sixth and reached as far as third before both runners were left in scoring position. The Cougars left a total of six runners on base, one fewer than the Longhorns.
Taylor DuPree joined Belfiore with two hits and moved with eight of breaking Amanda Cone's school record of 250 career base knocks.
Summer Jenkins relieved Berouty after the Leahy triple and retired the only two batters she faced to keep it a one-run game. But von Sprecken set the Cougars down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure Texas' second win in three tournament contests.
