Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Kelly Sinclair drove in three runs and Dexlie Inman slammed her first career home run in a 6-4 win over Furman, and Lexee Emanuel homered and knocked in three in an 8-3 victory over Norfolk State as the College of Charleston swept two games at the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (14-7) improved to a season-best seven games over .500 and continue tournament action with games against Wright State on Saturday at 2:30 and Winthrop on Sunday at 12:15.
Against the Paladins in the first game, Sinclair had a two-run single and Yari Felix stole home in the fifth to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead in support of Izzy Berouty, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth. Felix had three hits in the game and four on the day.
But after a pair of walks, Marissa Guimbarda broke up Berouty's no-hit bid with a double that plated both runs. Sinclair made it 6-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Paladin comeback attempt was not over yet.
AnnaRose Borelli led off the seventh with a home run, and Furman added another run in the frame before Berouty was able to close it out for her 10th win of the season. She gave up three hits and fanned two in the complete game performance.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third when Inman continued her red hot hitting with a line drive over the fence in left. The sophomore second baseman has seven hits in her last 12 at bats with five runs scored and three RBI over that span. Inman had two hits and scored twice against the Paladins.
Emanuel doubled in a run in the fourth to make it 2-0 before the Cougars gave themselves a seemingly comfortable margin with the three-run fifth.
Charleston fell behind Norfolk State, 3-2, when Kylee Lopez homered to cap a three-run Spartan third. The lead proved shortlived when the Cougars struck for four in their half of the inning, taking the lead on a Sinclair RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Jordin Jones and making it 6-3 on a two-run homer by Emanuel, her second of the year.
A run-scoring double by Brittany Vicary in the fourth and a wild pitch which brought home pinch runner Jordan Barcus in the fifth rounded out the Cougar scoring.
Kylie Burke worked a pair of perfect frames in her four-inning start and picked up the win, her second of the year. Summer Jenkins allowed four hits in three shutout innings for the save.
