Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Macey Gunther broke a tie with a two-out single in the sixth, and the College of Charleston left the tying run at third in the seventh as Wright State downed the Cougars, 3-2, on the second day of the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point.

The loss evened the season series, with the Cougars defeating the Raiders, 11-4, last weekend at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. Charleston (14-8) wraps up Holy City Showdown play against Winthrop on Sunday at 12:15.

Both teams scored twice in the first and wasted several scoring opportunities over the next four innings before Kelly Dillow walked to lead off the sixth, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a base hit to right by Gunther to put the Raiders in front.

The Cougars got leadoff singles from Taylor Belfiore in the sixth and Kelly Sinclair in the seventh, and both runners eventually reached third before being stranded. Charleston left a total of 10 runners in the game, the same as Wright State.

Izzy Berouty allowed hits to the first four Raiders and two scored, but she was able to strike out a pair to avoid further damage. The Cougars threatened right away in their half of the first on a single by Taylor DuPree, the first of her three hits, and a walk to Yari Felix. With two outs, Madison Whitaker threw wildly on a Sara Garcia grounder to short and DuPree and Felix scored to tie the game.

DuPree increased her careeer hit total to 231 and moved into a tie for second in school history with Brooke Flowers (2001-04).

The Cougars left the bases loaded in the second and two on in the third and fifth to thwart opportunities to take the lead.

Berouty allowed eight hits in tossing her seventh complete game of the season, and the loss was just her third in 13 decisions. Ally Russell surrendered seven hits and no earned runs in five innings for the win, and Ashley Sharp worked two innings of one-hit relief for the save.
