Mount Pleasant, S.C. – The College of Charleston scored 14 unanswered runs to wipe out a 7-1 deficit in a 15-7 victory over Towson that gained the Cougars a split of Saturday's doubleheader at Patriots Point.
Towson took the opener by a score of 3-2. The teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at noon followed by Senior Day recognition of four-year starters Taylor DuPree, Sara Garcia and Jordin Jones.
It was Jones who played the role of hero in the second game comeback with a grand slam as part of an eight-run fourth. Kelly Sinclair had an RBI single and Gracyn Thrasher put the Cougars (28-22, 7-10 CAA) in front, 8-7, with a two-run double to the gap in right center.
Pinch runner Jordan Barcus scored on the back end of a double steal, and following two walks Jones launched her sixth homer of the year and 22nd of her career over the fence in left. The left fielder finished the second game with three hits and scored three times as part of a 16-hit Cougar attack.
Five Cougars had multiple hits, with Madi Brown posting a career-high four. Sinclair, Thrasher and Taylor Belfiore also had two hits, with Belfiore homering to start a two-run fifth. Thrasher knocked in a total of three runs while Sinclair scored three times.
DuPree had four hits in the doubleheader to tie George Mason's Stacy James for the all-time CAA lead with 264. DuPree also scored a run in the opener to give her a new Cougar record with 167, two shy of eclipsing the conference record held by Niki Prince of James Madison.
Izzy Berouty was reached for eight hits and five earned runs but benefited from the offensive explosion to win for the 16th time this season.
Charleston had its chances in the first game with 10 hits but stranded 11 runners including the bases loaded in the second and third, with both of those innings ending on fly balls to the warning track in left.
Belfiore and Garcia both had two hits, with Belfiore following a Garcia double with a RBI single in the fifth that pulled the Cougars within 3-2. Jones also had an RBI when her third-inning single brought home DuPree, who had doubled with one out.
Charleston put a runner on with two outs in its final two turns at the plate on a single by DuPree and walk to Belfiore but couldn't punch across the tying run.
Summer Jenkins went the first 3.1 innings and allowed all three Towson runs. Kylie Burke came in with one out in the fourth and went 3.2 scoreless frames with a pair of strikeouts.
