Mount Pleasant, S.C. – On Senior Day at Patriots Point, it was a trio of underclassmen that sparked the College of Charleston to a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Conference series-clinching victory over Towson.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Gracyn Thrasher doubled to the gap in left center and pinch runner Savannah Mullen scored from third on a single by sophomore Yari Felix to provide the Cougars with the walk-off win in their final home game of the season.
The Cougars (29-22, 8-10 CAA) enter the final weekend at UNCW in fourth place, one game ahead of Elon (7-11) and two clear of the Seahawks (6-12), who host Charleston next Friday and Saturday. Towson (39-13, 12-6) sits firmly in third place behind league-leaders Hofstra and James Madison.
The CAA Tournament features the top five teams at the end of the regular season and will take place in Harrisonburg, Va., May 9-11.
Another sophomore – right hander Summer Jenkins – went the distance in the circle for the first solo shutout of her career. She allowed seven hits in earning her 11th win of the season while shutting down one of the top offensive teams in the country.
Towson entered the series ranked second in the nation in scoring at just over seven runs a game and third with a .345 team batting average. The Tigers had won nine in a row before dropping two of three to the Cougars.
It was also a milestone day for one of the three Cougar seniors – third baseman Taylor DuPree. DuPree became the all-time CAA leader in hits when her single in the third increased her career total to 265. She added another hit in the seventh, a crucial one-out single that enabled Mullen to advance to third ahead of the Felix game winner.
DuPree was joined by Sara Garcia and Jordin Jones in the postgame senior ceremonies. Garcia and Jones were held hitless on Sunday but will conclude their careers prominently featured in the Cougar record book along with DuPree.
Felix finished with three of Charleston's eight hits and the walk-off was her second of the season. She also played the role of hero with a two-run double in an extra inning win over Winthrop on March 11.
