Wilmington, N.C. – The College of Charleston is still one win away from earning a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament after the Cougars dropped a doubleheader at UNCW by scores of 2-1 and 2-0 on Friday.
Charleston (29-24, 8-12 CAA) can also gain a spot in the postseason even if it loses to the Seahawks (18-27, 8-12) on Saturday should Elon also fall at Delaware. The Phoenix and Blue Hens are both 7-13 in the league, and the Cougars would own the tiebreaker over Delaware but not Elon.
The Cougars led 1-0 and were three outs away from the clincher in the opening game when the Seahawks tied on a home run by Dominique Travers. Charleston loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth but could not score, and UNCW won it in its half of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Emily Langkamp.
Taylor Belfiore singled in a run in the fourth, and Summer Jenkins worked six innings of four-hit shutout ball before the Seahawk rally. Sarah Davis surrendered six hits and struck out six to earn the win. Belfiore and Taylor DuPree both had two hits for Charleston, which left eight runners on base.
Izzy Berouty allowed only five hits and two unearned runs in dropping a pitcher's duel in the nightcap. UNCW loaded the bases with nobody out in the second and capitalized on a Cougar error to plate both of its runs. Charleston could not take advantage of several opportunites, leaving runners in scoring position in four of the first five innings.
