Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra maintained its hold on first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a doubleheader sweep over the College of Charleston on Saturday.
The Pride (23-8, 8-0 CAA) pounded out 20 hits, including six home runs, to win by scores of 11-1 and 10-2 and stay one game ahead of James Madison. The Cougars (22-17, 3-5) managed only eight hits in the two games, with one being a solo homer by Dexlie Inman in the opener, her third of the season.
The teams wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at noon. Charleston then returns home for four games, facing Georgia Southern on Tuesday and James Madison over the weekend.
Inman's homer came in the third inning and cut a two-run Hofstra lead down to 2-1. But the Pride scored nine times in the fourth, with seven coming on home runs by Brielle Pietrafesa, Megan Patierno and Nikki Mihalowski.
Hofstra jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap before the Cougars tied it in the second. Sara Garcia singled and scored when an infield hit by Inman was thrown away for a two-base error. Madi Brown tied it with a grounder to second that plated Inman.
Michaela Transue gave the Pride the lead for good with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Two Hofstra runs in the third and five more in the sixth ended the contest.
