Harrisonburg, Va. – The College of Charleston split two games on the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, holding off UNCW, 8-6, before surrendering a late lead in a 5-3 loss to host and two-time defending champion James Madison.
In a wild opening game, the Cougars (30-26) held on against UNCW after building leads of 4-0 and 7-3. In Charleston's second game, the No. 22 Dukes erased a 3-0 deficit created by a pair of Madi Brown homers with five runs over their final two at bats and then withstood a threat in the seventh.
Charleston will face UNCW again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in an elimination game. The Seahawks stayed alive with a win over Towson in Wednesday's final contest. JMU will play Hofstra in the winner's bracket at 10:30 a.m.
Dexlie Inman drove in two runs, including one with a seventh inning double that provided an insurance tally, and Summer Jenkins worked three innings of two-hit shutout relief for her second save of the year in the victory over the Seahawks.
Charleston scored single runs in the first on an RBI single by Gracyn Thrasher and the third when Taylor DuPree came across on a base hit by Jordin Jones. The run was the 168th of DuPree's career, moving her into a tie for the all-time CAA lead with former JMU standout Niki Prince.
The Cougars took advantage of a pair of UNCW errors to score twice more in the third, but the Seahawks answered with a three-run homer by Dominique Travers in the bottom of the inning. Inman and Yari Felix produced runs in the fourth with RBI ground outs, and Brown doubled in a run in the fifth to rebuild the Charleston cushion to four runs.
UNCW reached starter Izzy Berouty for three singles and a bases loaded walk in its half of the fifth to bring Jenkins in the game. The sophomore allowed runs on a hit by pitch and sacrifice fly before blanking the Seahawks over the final two innings.
Brown, who began the day with one home run this season and three in her career, followed a Gracyn Thrasher hit by pitch with a two-run blast to right center to stake Charleston to a 2-0 lead over the Dukes in the second. Two innings later, Brown's drive to center hit the top of the fence and dropped over for her second homer of the game and third in the past two years against JMU.
Jenkins held the Dukes to just three hits over 4.1 shutout innings before Morgan Tolle hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 3-2. The rally continued against Berouty, who relieved Jenkins and was victimized by three straight two-out RBI singles in the sixth, including one by Sara Jubas, who had four hits.
The Cougars weren't finished, however, as DuPree, Yari Felix and Jordin Jones all singled with one out in the seventh to load the bases. A grounder by Sara Garcia turned into a force play at the plate, and Taylor Belfiore's drive to left center was caught on the warning track to end the game.
