Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Izzy Berouty concluded a spectacular weekend in the circle with 5.1 shutout innings in relief, and the College of Charleston rallied in the sixth following a weather delay for a 7-3 win over UNCW that clinched a berth in the CAA Tournament.
The Cougars (25-28, 9-12 CAA) needed to sweep the three-game series from the Seahawks (26-28, 8-13) to earn the fifth tournament spot and did just that, scoring five times in the sixth to erase a 3-2 deficit after the game was halted for 38 minutes due to lightning.
The fifth-seeded Cougars will open CAA Tournament play on Wednesday at 11 a.m., against No. 4 seed Drexel.
Charleston trailed 3-2 before Kelly Sinclair and Dexlie Inman singled to begin the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice bunt by Savannah Huff was thrown away to load the bases and, one out later, Alondra Vicary hit a ground ball to first.
Seahawk first baseman Dominique Travers' throw home was late and went to the backstop, allowing two runs to score to put the Cougars in front. Madi Brown followed with a two-run double, and Jordan Barcus produced her first career hit and RBI on a grounder up the middle to cap the inning.
Sinclair, Brown and Barcus were the three Charleston seniors playing their final home game at Patriots Point and were honored in a postgame ceremony.
Lexee Emanuel hit her second home run of the series in the first, a two-run shot, but UNCW rallied for three in the second. Berouty entered with the bases loaded and two outs and was the beneficiary of an outstanding diving catch in shallow right by Inman that saved at least two runs.
Berouty cruised through her time in the circle, retiring 16 of the 18 batters she faced, to earn her eighth win of the season. She allowed only a walk in the third and a two-out single in the seventh. For the series, the junior worked 9.1 innings and gave up only one hit with five strikeouts while adding a pair of saves.
