WILMINGTON, N.C. –
College of Charleston began its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with 6-3 and 2-1 losses to UNCW in a Saturday doubleheader at Boseman Field. The teams wrap up their series with a single game Sunday at noon.

In the opener, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Mia Dittoe and an RBI single by Jenna Helberg. The Seahawks responded with six unanswered runs, including three in the fifth, to go in front, 6-1.

CofC cut into its deficit with two in the sixth when Noel Dominguez doubled in Shealyn Starks and Aniz Roman. Dittoe, Helberg and Roman each had two hits in the opening game.

Payton Lemire, who worked 1 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief in the opener, started the nightcap and gave up only five hits and two unearned runs in a complete game. She was outdueled, however, by Amberlyn Pearce, who tossed a four-hitter.

Like they did in the first game, the Cougars jumped in front in the second on an RBI double by Starks. After UNCW scored twice in the bottom of the inning, CofC put the leadoff batter on base in its next three turns and got a double from Roman to start the seventh but couldn't break through.
