MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston freshman class shined at the plate, in the circle and with the glove in a 6-0 win over Marist to finish 2-2 at the Maroon & Gold Challenge at Patriots Point.
Charleston got a dominant pitching performance from freshman
Caroline Conner, and newcomers
Karlee Hughes,
Halle Cannon,
Mary-Kathryn Scott,
Ella Campbell and
Audri Bates combined for seven hits, four runs and four RBI.
Scott also provided the defensive highlight of the day for the Cougars. After a leadoff single by the Red Foxes in the sixth, the rangy Scott went to her left to snag a grounder up the middle, stepped on second and threw to first to complete a nifty double play to stifle a potential rally.
By that time, Charleston had already built a 5-0 lead with a second inning outburst. Scott tripled in the first run, and Bates followed with a single to short for her first career RBI. Bates also had the first hit of her career in Saturday's first game against Cleveland State.
Bates stole second and scored on a hit by
Aniz Roman. Cannon then capped off the uprising with a two-run double to give Conner more than enough cushion to record her second win of the season. Scott added a double and scored on an error after a Campbell pinch hit single in the sixth.
Conner did not allow more than one base runner over the first four innings. She then retired back-to-back hitters to strand the bases loaded in the fifth and retired the side in order after a leadoff single in the seventh.
The Cougars dropped a 1-0 decision to Cleveland State earlier in the day despite another outstanding outing by
Payton Lemire. The senior allowed only four hits to the Vikings and has given up just one earned run in her last 21 innings to lower her ERA to 3.09.
