CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team dropped the first game of their CAA home opener to Stony Brook, 3-1, Friday evening.
Malaka Belser hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead for the Cougars.
Payton Lemire fanned three batters through four scoreless innings before giving up a triple that brought home the tying run in the fifth.
The Cougars tried to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on but were unable to plate a run.
Shealyn Starks made a stellar defensive play in the top of the seventh to throw out the go-ahead run at home after diving into the first base bag.
Charleston was unable to score in the seventh either, forcing extra innings where the Seawolves hit a two-RBI single in the top of the eighth to solidify their win.
The Cougars and Seawolves will face off again at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Patriots Point.
