MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team picked up two wins to open the Low Country Classic. The Cougars defeated Buffalo 6-5 in extra innings and Evansville 11-4.
After the Bulls struck first with four runs in the second inning, Charleston responded with four hits in the bottom of the frame.
Sierra Paradis hit an RBI single and was followed up by
Kaytlin Stacey's two-RBI double to bring the Cougars back within one.
McKenna Kelly came in for relief in the third inning to hold the Bulls without an earned run, punching out four in the process.
The game went scoreless after the second until
Mia Dittoe doubled in the bottom of the seventh and was driven home by Stacey's second double to tie the game.
The Bulls hit a lead-off RBI double in the eighth to retake their lead, but
Malaka Belser tied the game again with a sacrifice fly.
Halle Cannon and
Shealyn Starks hit back-to-back two-out singles to allow
Karlee Hughes to walk it off in her first appearance of the season.
After Evansville scored in the opening frame,
Shealyn Starks regained the lead with a two-RBI double, and Charleston scored a run in every following inning.
Brooke Marquez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning, and Belser drove in another run to follow up.
Stacey continued her hot streak with another two-RBI single in the third to lead to a 7-1 advantage. The rookie recorded her sixth RBI of the day with another single up the middle in the fifth. Two more runs scored in the fourth and sixth frames by way of Evansville errors to seal the win.
Payton Lemire pitched a complete game against the Purple Aces to record a season-best five strikeouts.
Charleston will close out the Low Country Classic against Wofford on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Patriots Point.
