Cougars Complete Home Slate with Sweep of Campbell

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In a season full of dramatic moments at Patriots Point, College of Charleston saved the best for last.

The Cougars rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 win over Campbell to complete a sweep of their final home CAA series of the season and finish the year with a 14-1 conference record at Patriots Point.

Charleston (27-23, 17-7 CAA) earned four sweeps at home, and captured its sixth series win of the year overall. The 17 CAA victories tie the school record for most conference wins in a season first set in 2005 when the Cougars went 17-4 in the SoCon.

Izzy Alley pitched the final two innings in relief of starter Mackenzie Mathis to pick up a win to go along with saves on Friday and Saturday. Mathis struck out six in five innings to put the freshman over the 100 mark on the season, finishing the game with 104.

Game Summary
  • Trailing 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out.
  • Kennedy Rhue popped up to second, but Jay Wrightsman alertly tagged up and scored from third to tie it.
  • Charleston again put three runners on, and Leela Langston raced home on a wild pitch to complete the sweep.
  • Austy Miller was on base all four times with three singles and a walk while extending her hitting streak to 12 games.
  • Wrightsman drew a pair of walks to go along with a hit, scored twice and stole three bases to give her 25 on the year, just three shy of the school record.
  • The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first on a walk and stolen base by Wrightsman and an RBI single by Miller.
  • Campbell put the leadoff batter on base in every inning but could not break through until scoring twice in the sixth.
