Charleston Defeats Western Carolina in First Game of Lowcountry Classic

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Mackenzie Mathis struck out six in her first complete game of the season to help the Cougars defeat Western Carolina University 3-2 Friday, Feb. 13 in the first day of the Lowcountry Classic.
Charleston is now 5-3 after falling to UMass 4-3 in the second game of the day.

GAME 1 CRITICAL POINTS
- Charleston started hot when Leela Langston doubling to left field, allowing Bronwyn Conroy to earn her sixth run of the season in the bottom of the first. Two batters later, Karlee Hughes hit a 2 RBI single, bringing home Austy Miller and Langston to give the Cougars a 3-0 advantage.
- In the top of the fifth, WCU secured two runs but could not connect to catch up to Charleston the rest of the way.
- Mathis pitched seven innings allowing just three hits and striking out six Catamounts.
- Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Conroy scored after Langston hit a sacrifice fly.
- In the top of the second, Ryley Kutter struck out the side.
- UMass responded with two runs in the top of the third before Kutter hit rewind and struck out three Minutewomen in back-to-back frames.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Audri Bates attempted the comeback with a shallow single to right field for Hailey Seymour to score, bringing the Cougars within two.
- Trying to keep the hitting streak alive, Langston singled to left field for her first hit of the game and Conroy ran home from third to leave the final score 4-3.
- Mathis allowed three hits against WCU while the Catamounts allowed eight.
- Kutter struck out three in a row twice while Campbell Schaen struck out three in a row at the top of the sixth after a pitching change.
- Conroy leads the team with eight runs and ties Langston for most hits with 13 each. Conroy is also a perfect 10-for-10 on the bases to begin her young career.
- Seymour leads the Cougars with 12 RBI and four home runs.
- Charleston returns for the second day of the Lowcountry Classic at Patriots Point Saturday, February 14 to host UConn and WCU again. The Cougars face the Huskies at 3:00 p.m. and the Catamounts at 5:30 p.m.
