
Cougars Defeat UConn in Second Day of Lowcountry Classic

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Mackenzie Mathis tossed her second straight complete game, holding UConn to one run as the Cougars beat the Huskies 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Charleston moves to 6-4 this season following a 10-4 loss to Western Carolina in its second contest of the day.

GAME 1 CRITICAL POINTS
- Mathis shutout the Huskies in the top of the first throwing just 10 pitches.
- Bronwyn Conroy singled to the left side on a 0-1 count before stealing her 11th straight base to advance to second. Leela Langston hit a triple for her first hit of the day to allow Conroy to earn her first run of the day.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Conroy walked prior to stealing second base. Austy Miller singled to the left and Conroy scored from second.
- In the top of the sixth, UConn scored their single run of the day against the Cougars.
- Charleston had four hits against the Huskies coming from four different Cougars.
- Erin McDaid made her first collegiate start in the circle against Western Carolina.
- Trailing 2-0 in the second, Halle Cannon singled to left field while Sally Trent ran from third to home for one RBI leaving the score 2-1.
- Western Carolina tacked on three more runs in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fifth.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Cannon scored Charleston's fourth run after Samantha Horn hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field leaving the score 10-4 after the Catamounts scored three in the top of the inning.
- Charleston featured six pitchers against WCU with Ryley Kutter entering the game last to shutout WCU in the top of the seventh.
- Mathis pitched her second complete game against the Huskies striking out six and allowing just six hits.
- Conroy recorded her twelfth stolen base going 12-13 on the season. The freshman leads the team in runs with 10.
- Langston and Conroy are tied for 16 hits.
- Hailey Seymour leads Charleston in RBI with 12.
- The final day of the Lowcountry Classic will feature a 9 a.m. contest between Sacred Heart and UMass followed by Charleston and UPenn. The Cougars' contest will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
